No one wants to go through the distress of becoming a victim of identity theft, but it can happen to even the most vigilant people. Arizona-based LifeLock is one of the most popular identity theft protection companies out there, gaining over 4 million customers in the U.S. since its 2005 inception. Now, LifeLock falls under the Symantec umbrella – a brand familiar to the many users of Norton’s security products. It’s now possible to combine Norton’s products with LifeLock for further protection, allowing you to stay safer online and reduce the risk of becoming a target for identity theft in the first place. Not only does LifeLock aim to monitor threats to your identity, it will swiftly resolve them and reimburse you for up to $1,000,000 in damages. Although LifeLock doesn’t offer a free trial, you can still take advantage of its 60-day money-back guarantee. Prices start at just $8.99 per month for standard membership.
Thankfully, getting started with LifeLock is a simple, straightforward process. Of course, you’ll need to input your personal details like date of birth and physical address. LifeLock also requires a credit card number, valid driver’s license, and of course your Social Security number. Unfortunately for those north of the border, the service isn’t available in Canada yet – for now it’s exclusive to the U.S. LifeLock requires its users to be at least 18 years old, but there are ways for parents to register minors as well.
LifeLock monitors all the possible financial transactions that can be indicative of identity theft. This means that applications for new credit, refinancing, or any kind of significant changes to your bank account will be flagged right away. But be warned that LifeLock Standard users don’t have access to warnings about large withdrawals, transfers, or purchases.
It’s not just financial irregularities that LifeLock keeps an eye on. LifeLock also monitors court records, address changes, and whether you’ve applied for (or even inquired about) things like store reward cards or airline frequent flyer plans. On top of that, LifeLock monitors the dark web to see if your details have appeared in any data breaches and checks whether your name appears on a sex offender registry, although these features aren’t available for Standard users either.
Of course, LifeLock will alert you in case of any suspicious activity being detected. You can receive alerts either by email, text, phone, or through the LifeLock app, which is available for both Android and iOS.
LifeLock has specialized identity restoration agents who will work with you if you’ve become a victim of identity theft despite the protections it provides. The agent’s role is to help you with resolving all the issues caused by the identity theft. Like many of its competitors, LifeLock offers up to $1 million in reimbursement for any stolen funds. Of course, that seven-figure sum is reserved only for Ultimate Plus subscribers. Standard users have to make do with $25,000 in coverage, while Advantage subscribers have up to $100,000, so it’s well worth choosing whichever subscription matches your financial situation.
As well as identity theft, LifeLock will help you out in case your wallet is stolen or even if it’s lost. LifeLock will assist you with canceling and replacing your cards, including your driver’s license, insurance, and Social Security cards.
It’s not uncommon for children under the age of 18 to also become victims of identity theft. LifeLock has special protection for minors, and will search the web and notify you if your child’s personal information has been found on file-searching networks or the dark web.
Those lucky enough to have a large number of assets will be glad to know that the Ultimate Plus subscription includes alerts for any fraudulent withdrawals or transfers from your 401(k). Similarly, investment accounts are also closely monitored so you don’t lose everything you’ve worked hard for.
LifeLock’s pricing scheme is tiered and prices change after the first year. Plans begin with the cheaper Standard package, which lacks many features compared to the more expensive Advantage and Ultimate Plus plans. The least expensive way to get LifeLock is with the Standard plan for just $8.99 a month, although this is at the cost of some of the important features found in the more expensive packages. After the first year, the price for Standard membership moves from $8.99 to $11.99. Anyone looking at getting the Standard package should note that you can get LifeLock as part of a Norton 360 package that includes antivirus protection, 100GB storage, parental controls, and a VPN for the same monthly starting price of $8.99. The only difference between the two is that after a year you’ll have to pay $14.99 per month – $3 more monthly than the Standard package – but considering all the bonus features it’s definitely worth the difference.
The Advantage plan comes with a higher reimbursement ceiling for stolen funds, criminal alerts, and bank account activity monitoring starting at $17.99 per month in the first year before increasing to $24.99 after that. Finally, there’s the Ultimate Plus package aimed at those with a higher net worth. It provides everything included in the other two packages, plus credit monitoring over all three bureaus, 401(k) and investment activity alerts, and a reimbursement fund of up to $1 million. Both the Advantage and Ultimate Plus plans come with Norton 360 so you can enjoy plenty of extra benefits.
Unfortunately, there is no way to test LifeLock before using it, as there’s no free version or trial available. However, LifeLock does provide a generous 60-day money-back guarantee although we recommend reading the terms and conditions thoroughly before you enter your credit card details, as there are some catches.
As you would expect for any brand under the Symantec banner, LifeLock offers some great customer service. There’s a staff member ready for customers seeking phone support 24 hours a day. This is especially vital, as you never know when you may need help with your cards and accounts. Alternatively, you can choose to contact LifeLock through email, live chat, Twitter, or Facebook and expect a timely and helpful reply.
The LifeLock website has an FAQ section with important information about things like credit freezes and suspicious activity. There are also plenty of interesting and useful articles in the LifeLock blog, with insights into subjects including scams and tax fraud, offering plenty of helpful tips to keep you safe and vigilant.
LifeLock has some excellent features that will give its users some peace of mind and greatly reduce their risk of falling prey to identity thieves. In particular, we like the variety of options for receiving alerts and having dedicated agents ready to help with restoration and reimbursement. Having bundled extras from the Symantec family is also very useful, and well worth going for even if you’re only seeking identity theft protection. However, the Standard package’s lack of many features makes it hard to recommend for the price. Instead, we’d urge potential customers to look at the Advantage and Ultimate Plus options as they include key features like credit card activity alerts and investment monitoring. Because of this, we recommend LifeLock to those with more to protect and who can afford to invest in the premium packages.
